Being promoted from within a team and being expected to then manage that team, while it has a lot of good perks and opportunities, can also cause many issues. One of the main issues is that of dealing with the rest of the team when you are promoted. There may be resentment at the fact you got promoted, or they may expect to be let off ding work because they worked next to you for 2 years.
It is important that the ground rules are laid out as soon as the promotion is announced. The team need to know what the changes will be, what they can expect from you. You in return need to find out what issues the team have, make sure that they understand your new role. You must make sure that you do not suddenly change personality just because you are a manager. While things will change, you cannot go from being one of the team to being the teams enemy, just to assert your authority over them. The most important thing is to be honest with the team, and make sure that they are as happy as can be with the changes.
